From: My Money Blog

In response to my post on watching free online TV content, I got an
e-mail pointing out that if you love to watch live sports,
it’s still hard to beat a Direct TV subscription. Instead,
they lowered their bill significantly with a phone call and some
haggling. The overall process is basically the same as haggling
with your cable internet provider. Call customer service and tell
them you are thinking about canceling your service. Your goal is to
reach the Retentions Department. As you can tell from the name, the
primary goal of this group is to keep you as a customer (for as
cheaply as possible). This means they have the most discretion when
it comes to service discounts. Prepare your pi...

Bargaining Chips: Broadband Internet for $19.99/Month

‘Tis the season for some haggling with your internet service
provider! Let them know you have other options, and you should be
able to get a lower bill for at least a few months that can add up
to some big savings. Below are some new customer offers - you might
not get them to match completely, but anything is good in my book.
(Also handy for those that recently moved - try using the name of
another household member - or just want to start up new service.)

Lower Your Credit Card APR: Phone Script from DebtGoal

DebtGoal is a new site that helps you track and manage your
debt-reduction goals (as opposed to a debt settlement company).
After the free trial, it runs $11.95 per month. One of the things
they do is try and guide you to lower the interest rates on your
credit cards. Here’s a sample script that you can try out
yourself for free, which is quite simple but probably also
effective: Hello, my name is _______________. I have been a
cardholder since ____. In the past few months, several credit card
companies have offered me lower rates than my current rate with
you. I value my relationship with you, but I would like you to
match the other offers that I have received and reduce my interest

How I Cut my Comcast Cable Bill by 33% (Without Losing Any Service)
Last week, I wrote that you can negotiate anything. This guest post
by G.E. Miller gives a real-life example of using negotiation to
save money. For more from G.E., check out his personal finance
blogs 20somethingfinance.com and microfrugality.com. For the third
of the country who has no choice but to turn to Comcast for cable
television, the thought of price haggling is about as appealing as
a root canal. Comcast has a notorious reputation for being
unwilling to make their customers happy. Customers of other
monopolistic cable outfits across the nation know the feeling.
However, the potential savings that can come from limiting a
monthly subscription expense can be enormous. What’s a frugal
personal financier to do? Dealing with your local cable superpower
doesn’t have to be a...
Ooma Phone Update: Another Satisfied Customer

A couple of folks asked me for an update about my Ooma VoIP
Telephone system, which I bought for $158 to replace my POTS
landline in early December and provides me with unlimited free
local and long distance “forever”. Well, it’s
been working great for the last 4.5 months. The best compliment I
can give about it is that I never think about it, just like with my
old landline. I’ve never experienced an outage yet; The dial
tone is always there. (I hope I didn’t just jinx myself. You
can follow Ooma on Twitter for status updates.) Caller ID and all
that jazz works fine. I can send and receive faxes. I check my
voicemail online from work or when traveling. I have read
